Loews Theatres Trailer Competition

In the late 90s, I felt compelled to try my hand at a creative video short. Loews Theatres was sponsoring a trailer competition, so after a litle brainstorming, I quickly assembled a ragtag group of friends & family in the Jefferson Theater in downtown Charlottesville.

The cast included Marley Peale, Kevin Spetz, Mike Saylor, Alex Crosby, Paul & Nga Katz, and baby Kevin Jensen, forever immortalized in his pristine chubby state. Additional footage contained a drafted Nicole Kassell, who also shot the raw footage with her Sony DV camcorder, and Darryl delaPlata. (Nicole become a Charlottesville hometown hero with her quick rise to award winning screenplay writer and director.)

The clip starts with our heroine in a deserted theater, surrounded by obnoxious people, inflicted with a variety of annoyances: pushing of chairs, smoking, cell phone calls. At the end, we see this is hell, punishment for all who dare break the theater rules. (OK, the elevator pitch needs some work.)

Our clip was probably disqualified since it didn't explicitly discuss each banned behavior, but the whole process taught me to script out every scene before doing the shooting :) Preparation is a good idea, even if (or especially because) it's only a thirty second clip. The trailer was produced using a PC, Adobe Premiere, a Pinnacle DV500+ board and some stock digital footage of fire.
