iPhone Mania hits Palo Alto

Steve Jobs said people should queue up at an AT&T store for an iPhone, and he was mostly right. Well past midnight on Thursday, Jenn and I did a tour of the three stores around Palo Alto that will sell the iPhone: the Apple retail stores in Palo Alto and the Stanford Shopping Center, and the AT&T store at Page Mill Rd & El Camino Real. Guess which store is best for a procrastinating iPhone owner wannabe?

The Apple Palo Alto store had a sizable queue, which isn't surprising after notable technoblogger Scoble began broadcasting from his #1/#2 queue position on Thursday morning. Here is some camera video of the scene:

The AT&T store was almost deserted. Two guys were in the queue. That's all. We thought we had the winner.

Then we pulled into Stanford Shopping Center's parking lot to check out the second Apple store. Almost immediately, a security guard came by and asked us what we were doing there. "We're going to take photos of the Apple store," I said. The security guy said we'd have to leave. The mall was closed. I asked him if there was a line at the Apple store. He said the mall was closed and they had two security guards posted at the Apple store. Nobody but store employees would be allowed on the premises until close to 10 am.

So if you are looking to buy an iPhone and don't want to spend the night waiting, the best location is the Apple store in the Stanford Shopping Center. I'm tempted to take a day off from work and join the frenzy.

  1. So are you going to buy one? by Anonymous (2007-07-02)

So are you going to buy one? Or, like me, do you have a whole bunch of puts on APPL? http://richardsprague.blogspot.com
  2. I plan on buying the next by Bill (2007-07-11)

I plan on buying the next version if it has a real network, although I could get one earlier for "development" purposes :) Puts? Don't do much option trading and I'm a contrarian indicator. I sold my remaining AAPL shares hours before the doors opened. D'oh!
